How to run the XP System File Checker (SFC)

XP

System File Checker is also referred to as the SFC

This will fix any protected system files that a virus or spyware may have

corrupted. You will want to run this whenever a virus or major spyware has

been removed.

The System File Checker is an important application that scans the integrity

of all the protected system files on your PC. Should it locate an incorrect

version of a specific protected file SFC automatically replaces it with the

correct Microsoft version.

To check your Windows protected files, proceed as follows:

1. Click the Start button

2. From the Start Menu, Click Run

3. In the Run window, type: sfc /scannow and then press Enter

4. A window will appear “Windows File Protection” with a status bar.

5. Be patient because the scan may take some time.

6. If any files require replacing SFC will replace them. You may be asked to

insert your Windows XP CD for this process to continue.

7. The Windows File Protection window will close after the scan has completed.
